“Take a look around, then you will find an idea in nature.”; the development of the lighting systems for aquarium was, indeed, a proof of this account. Light has thress component colors: red, green and blue. The red wavelength is absorbed into water at the contact. This is the reason why everything looks blue under water; the red is filtered out by water but the blue end of the spectrum is transmissive and reflects on the objects in water. Therefore, the type of light high in blue wavelength is more suitable for providing light effectively to aquatic plants. We learned it from our close observation of environment under the water. Then, the nature gave us another lesson. In the natural environment, water plants receive a good amount of light only for a short period at high noon because the light energy becomes rapidly attenuated in water. We started developing NA lamp with an idea, “water plants are using the blue wavelength of light for photosynthesis”. Back then, it was a common practice in the hobby of aquarium to use the lamps high in red wavelength, which were produced mainly for terrestrial plants. NA lamp has the light adjusted to the color temperature of 8,000k (kelvin): the same level of the color temperature when light reaches at the bottom of the river during high noon. The light with 10,000k or higher sounds more effective, but it isn’t so for the image produced in that kind of light; the leaves of the plants look abnormally blue. Since one of the main aspects of aquarium is its appearance, we wanted to reproduce an attractive view of water plants actually seen under the water. In March of 1994, NA lamp was released as the first fluorescent lamp for the aquatic plants, and it was well received among aquarium hobbyists. They were thrilled with the effect of NA lamp, which promoted a healthy growth of underbrush at the bottom of the tank and made water plants inside look sparkly. Since then, the idea, “water plants are using the blue wavelength of light for photosynthesis”, became common knowledge in the aquarium hobby.
We now have metal halide lamps and lighting equipments which were created based on the principle of NA lamp. The release of Grand Solar I was one of the remark points in our continuous technological progress to the ideal lighting system. The system is equipped with a combination of a metal halide lamp and fluorescent lamps, which make it possible to provide an artificial light just like the natural sunlight. During high noon when the level of photosynthesis is increases, apply the strong light of the metal halide lamp to the aquarium and promote more active photosynthetic process. Then, you turn off the metal halide lamp and enjoy the beautiful view of the aquarium under a soft light of fluorescent lamps. In the production process, to secure the system’s stable quality we decided to use Japanese products for all its electronic sections. Considering of the high performance of metal halide lamps, we adopted the electronic ballast of the highest quality for Grand Solar I. The system has some radiation slits in several areas and aluminum radiation fins on both sides; they were all designed specifically for releasing the heat of the metal halide lamp out of the system. The embossed light reflector has placed over the metal halide lamp for diffusing its light extensively.
Another issue was the style of the system. It can’t be disregarded because an aquarium can be an important interior accessory at home and in the office. The design has to be simple and suitable for any kind of setting. This is a stylish lighting equipment set against the elegant curving lines of the roof and straight lines of the radiation fins. The color is in classic metallic silver. All the lighting systems in ADA’s Solar series, including Grand Solar I, are very stylish, and they don’t disturb the atmosphere around the space. They have accomplished to provide light in a better form- closer to natural sunlight.
