ADA first started applying conventional tweezers for planting aquatic plants thickly in the Nature Aquarium layout; it was the time when planting by hand was a common practice. However, using conventional tweezers for planting wasn’t quite ideal. There was a risk of crushing the tissues of stems and roots with the tip of a tweezers while picking them up. Another problem was that some plants always stuck to the tweezers and were pulled out of soil together when the tweezers were removed after implanting. We were looking for something to solve these problems; because if you want to create a layout with more details, it is very important to set the plants on substrates precisely without damage.

From the view point of a user of aquarium products, ADA designed tweezers specialized just for taking care of water plants. There are some must-have features required for the tweezers. They should have slim-ends with a perfect bite. It would be ideal if you can feel the forces of compression and tension at the point of the tweezers directly with your finger tips. And their design must be suitable for being used in water. To figure out the right length and form of the tweezers was, however, another story. Our experiences in the area of aquarium were our only guide. In other words, the design of the tweezers came from the principal of ADA, who values experience and hands-on practice before anything. The tweezers took the form of unique elongated slim-ends; they were excellent for arranging a close-planting of water plants and for setting them easily in the small spaces between driftwood and stones. They also had a perfect bite and ideal spring strength for a good grip. Holding the tweezers, it was like they were a part of our hands, and we could feel the pressure on the tip of the tweezers. Here, we came up with a catch-copy, “Take account of the feeling like extensions of your own fingers”. Along with the catch-copy, ADA’s tweezers were released. The idea of using tweezers for planting water plants spread among hobbyists and became a common practice.

The production process of the trimming scissors was rather much more difficult. Our goal was to produce the scissors of long blades with great sharpness, which won’t damage the plants’ tissues. They also had to have mobility under the water. Compared to other conventional scissors, their blades and body were much longer and narrower; the design was absolutely not capable of mass production. The production process required a great effort of craftsmen and a long period of time: polishing, making blades, shaping the body and so on. At a phase of the polishing process, their elongated slim blades and body bent so easily. We had a great difficulty in lining up both ends of the blades because of their narrow and elongated forms. Then, if we tried to adjust the bend by case-hardening the steel, the scissors became too fragile and easy to break. The special skills of an experienced craftsman made it possible to create a warpage inside the blades, he held his breath and engraved the warpage with a grider at once. The craftsmen who were involved in the production told us that the products were created to the utmost of their techniques and ability. Together, we examined the level of their techniques and our requirements to the products over and over again. It was not to find a compromise, but to create the best scissors specialized for taking care of water plants. ADA’s tweezers and trimming scissors were then released as the first layout tools for water plants in the world.

Being meticulous about choosing the tools: it should be very important to enjoy the hobby. When you implant or cut a water plant, you may feel ADA’s efforts toward these products. As one of the users, ADA pays attention to the unseen details, the assurance of the layout tools.

Scissors

A high hardness tungsten steel is used for the blades of the latest Trimming Scissors and Pro-Scissors. Their sharpness keeps the impact on the plant to a minimum. Their finger rings are specially plated in a silver color. They fit comfortably in the fingers, and have an anti-slip effect.
